When OEM buyers move from prototypes to bulk orders, a structured supplier audit is the single most important step between a promising quote and a production disaster. A good audit is not a factory tour followed by dinner — it is a systematic evaluation of whether the supplier can repeatedly deliver tubing and components that match your specifications. This guide focuses on practical questions to ask before committing to production quantities of stainless steel capillary tubes, nitinol components, and small-diameter precision tubes.
A wall full of certificates does not prove that a supplier will consistently meet your tolerance, surface finish, or cleanliness requirements. Audits uncover the gap between what a supplier claims and what they practice on the shop floor. The most costly procurement problems — out-of-tolerance ID/OD, inconsistent burr removal, missing material traceability, undocumented process changes — are almost always detectable during a properly scoped audit. Start at the raw material warehouse. Ask how incoming tube stock or coil is verified against the mill certificate. A reliable supplier maintains a system linking each heat number or coil ID to incoming dimensional checks and certificate review records. Verify whether certificates are retained digitally or on paper, how long records are kept, and whether finished parts can be traced back to raw material heat numbers. The most revealing audit question: ask the supplier to measure a sample tube — ideally one of your own — while you watch. Observe whether they use calibrated instruments, measure at multiple points along the tube, and whether readings match your independent measurements. For capillary tubing, measurement technique alone can introduce errors of 0.01 mm or more. A supplier who cannot explain their method or measures only at one point is unlikely to control dimensions across a full production batch.

For medical tube components, the quality of the cut end often matters as much as dimensional accuracy. Burrs and inconsistent cut lengths are among the most common reasons for incoming inspection rejection. During an audit, observe the cutting area: are parameters documented per material and size? Is there a defined burr inspection standard? How are cut ends protected after processing? Ask to see samples from current production and inspect them under magnification if possible.

A capable supplier with weak process control is still a risk. Ask whether production parameters — cutting speed, tool condition, cleaning process — are documented and controlled. More importantly, ask what happens when something changes: a new raw material lot, a replacement tool, a different operator. A supplier without formal change notification may deliver conforming parts one month and non-conforming parts the next, without warning. This is critical for medical device components where process validation depends on consistent processing conditions.
The audit should also cover final cleaning and packaging. At minimum, the supplier should describe their cleaning process, confirm it removes cutting fluids and debris, and package parts to prevent damage and contamination during shipping. Verify that each production lot stays physically separate through cleaning, inspection, and packaging — mixed lots destroy traceability and can force 100% incoming inspection at the buyer’s facility.
Different materials require different audit emphasis. A thorough audit does not end when you leave the factory. Findings should directly inform your production quality agreement: what the supplier must inspect per lot, what records must accompany each shipment, and what triggers mandatory customer notification. If the audit revealed measurement at only one point per tube, your agreement should specify multi-point measurement. If lot traceability was weak at cleaning stages, require lot-separated packaging with external labels.
The goal is not to find a perfect supplier — no supplier is perfect. The goal is to understand where the risks are and put controls in place before you commit to production quantities. A supplier transparent about their limitations and willing to implement agreed controls is far more valuable than one who claims flawlessness but cannot demonstrate their process.
