If you are sourcing super duplex 2507 miniature tubing, you are likely balancing a difficult set of requirements: chloride pitting resistance for a downhole or seawater-exposed sensor, high strength without wall thickness that kills flow or formability, and dimensional tolerances tight enough for a medical or analytical instrument assembly. This article explains what UNS S32750 miniature tubing actually delivers, where it is used, how it is made, and what to put on a drawing or RFQ so suppliers quote the same part you designed.

Super duplex 2507 is the common industry name for UNS S32750, a ferritic-austenitic stainless steel with roughly 25% chromium, 7% nickel, 4% molybdenum, and 0.3% nitrogen. The grade is covered by ASTM A789 / A790 for seamless and welded tube, and by ASTM A240 for plate and sheet. EN 10088-2 lists it as 1.4410, and NORSOK M-650 is often referenced for material qualification in oil and gas work.
“Miniature” in this context generally means small-diameter tubing, typically from about 0.5 mm to 12.7 mm outside diameter, with wall thicknesses from roughly 0.05 mm to 1.5 mm. The exact boundary depends on the drawing, the mill, and the process route. Below about 1 mm OD, cold drawing and mandrel control become the limiting factors rather than the alloy itself.
Super duplex is not the same as 316L or 904L. Its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) is typically above 40, which is why it is specified where chlorides and mechanical load appear together. That same alloying also makes it harder to draw, weld, and anneal than standard austenitic grades.
If your application is primarily about corrosion resistance in a chloride-free environment, 316L or 904L may be sufficient and easier to source. Super duplex earns its place when strength, chloride resistance, and erosion resistance are all in play.
| Common name | Super duplex 2507 |
| UNS | S32750 |
| EN / W.-Nr. | 1.4410 |
| Product standards | ASTM A789 (seamless and welded tube), ASTM A790 (pipe), ASTM A240 (plate) |
| Typical PREN | Greater than 40, calculated from Cr, Mo, and N content |
| Typical yield strength | Around 550 MPa minimum for annealed product, but the actual value depends on product form, cold work, and the governing standard |
Do not accept a mill certificate that only says “2507” without a UNS or EN number. Ask for the heat number, the product standard, and the actual chemistry and mechanical results. For critical service, a ferrite-to-austenite ratio check and a corrosion test such as ASTM G48 Method A are commonly requested.
Miniature tubing is usually specified by OD and wall, with ID derived. For a given OD, the achievable wall range narrows as the diameter shrinks. Very thin walls in small diameters introduce handling, straightness, and ovality problems that the drawing should acknowledge.
If you need a specific ID for flow or for a mating component, specify both OD and ID and state which one is critical. Suppliers cannot always hold both to the same tolerance band.
Tolerances depend on the drawing, the material condition, the process route, and mutual agreement between parties. The table below shows ranges that are commonly discussed in the industry for cold-drawn small-diameter tube; they are not a guarantee of what any specific supplier can hold.
| Parameter | Typical discussion range |
| OD tolerance | About ±0.02 mm to ±0.10 mm for small diameters |
| Wall tolerance | About ±10% of nominal wall, tighter by agreement |
| ID tolerance | Derived from OD and wall, or specified separately |
| Concentricity / wall variation | Expressed as a percentage of wall or as an absolute value |
| Straightness | Typically 0.5 mm to 3 mm per meter, depending on diameter and temper |
| Length tolerance | Cut length tolerance by agreement, often ±0.5 mm to ±2 mm |
For super duplex specifically, cold work raises strength and reduces ductility, so very tight ovality and wall tolerances may require an intermediate anneal or a different drawing schedule. State whether the tube will be bent, flared, welded, or swaged after delivery, because that changes what the supplier can allow in the as-delivered condition.
End condition matters in miniature tubing more than in larger pipe. Options include:
Specify the maximum allowable burr height and whether the ID must be free of loose debris. For medical or analytical flow paths, a burr or a trapped particle can be a functional defect, not just a cosmetic one.
Super duplex miniature tubing is typically supplied in annealed and pickled condition, bright annealed condition, or cold-drawn condition. Surface finish may be specified as Ra in micrometers, or by a descriptive requirement such as “free of scale, oxide, and drawing marks.”
Cleanliness requirements vary widely. Some buyers need only a degreased surface; others require a documented cleaning process and a particulate limit. If your application is in a medical device, an analyzer, or an oxygen system, state the cleanliness specification explicitly rather than assuming a default. Do not assume any supplier’s standard cleaning meets a regulated requirement without written confirmation.
A typical documentation package for super duplex 2507 miniature tubing may include:
Third-party inspection, PPAP-style documentation, or first-article inspection can be requested, but availability depends on the supplier and should be confirmed in writing before the order is placed.
Miniature tubing is easily bent and scratched in transit. Common packaging approaches include:
If the tube will be fed into an automated machine, ask for a packaging format that matches your feed system. This is often more important than the box itself.
