310S stainless steel (UNS S31008) capillary tubes serve demanding high-temperature environments where oxidation resistance and structural integrity are non-negotiable. With 25% chromium and 20% nickel content, 310S outperforms grades like 304 and 316 in sustained elevated-temperature service — making it the preferred choice for furnace components, heat treatment equipment, and chemical processing systems.
310S is defined by its high chromium (24-26%) and nickel (19-22%) content under ASTM A213 / A269 specifications. The low carbon variant (max 0.08% C) minimizes carbide precipitation during welding and high-temperature exposure, reducing intergranular corrosion risk. This chemistry directly translates to an oxidation resistance rating of approximately 1035°C in continuous service — nearly 200°C higher than 304 stainless.
310S capillary tube delivers tensile strength of 515 MPa minimum (ASTM A213), yield strength of 205 MPa minimum, and elongation of 35% or more. Its thermal conductivity of approximately 14.2 W/m-K at 100°C and coefficient of thermal expansion of 15.9 μm/m-°C (20-100°C) must be considered during system design — particularly when tubing interfaces with materials of different expansion rates.
Capillary-grade 310S tubing often requires specific ID surface finishes for fluid dynamics and cleanliness. Standard finishes range from 0.8 μm Ra (mechanically polished) to 0.4 μm Ra (electropolished). For semiconductor and high-purity gas applications, electropolishing followed by passivation is standard practice. Buyers should specify Ra values in the RFQ rather than vague terms like “smooth” or “clean.”
While 304 and 316 stainless dominate general industrial tubing, 310S is essential when continuous operating temperatures exceed 800°C. 304 begins to scale significantly above 870°C; 310S maintains oxidation resistance to 1035°C. For intermittent service, 310S can handle short excursions to 1100°C. The tradeoff: 310S is typically 40-60% more expensive than 304 and harder to cold-work due to its higher nickel content.
310S capillary tubes are specialty products for high-temperature, oxidation-critical applications. The 25Cr-20Ni composition provides a clear performance advantage over 304/316 above 800°C. Buyers should focus RFQs on precise dimensional tolerances, surface finish values, and applicable ASTM standards rather than generic tube specifications. For custom 310S capillary tube requirements, consult with a manufacturer experienced in nickel-chromium alloy tube drawing and finishing.
